Newcastle United Women suffered a narrow 1-0 loss to Charlton Athletic in the WSL2, leaving head coach Becky Langley frustrated as her team extended their losing streak. Despite dominating large spells of the game and hitting the woodwork twice, the Magpies failed to find the net and now face mounting pressure to bounce back.
Newcastle United Fall to Charlton Athletic in WSL2 Clash
A 58th-minute penalty from Katie Bradley proved decisive as Charlton Athletic edged past Newcastle United in their latest WSL2 fixture. The Magpies created several chances and struck the frame of the goal twice, but luck was not on their side in front of goal.
This was Newcastle’s third consecutive defeat following a 2-1 Women’s League Cup loss to Nottingham Forest and a 4-2 away defeat against Birmingham City. The team now sits ninth in the WSL2 standings, with only one win and one draw from their opening matches.
Becky Langley: “We’re in a Rut”
Head coach Becky Langley admitted her side is struggling for results, though she praised the players’ performance and commitment.
“We’re in a little bit of a rut and we’ve got to keep working through it together. I think the girls knew they performed well today, and that’s where the disappointment stings even further,” Langley told the club’s media.
Langley Believes Newcastle Were the Better Side
Despite the defeat, Langley insisted Newcastle United were the more dominant team on the day.
“I thought we were really dominant. We were definitely the better team. We built confidently from the back and created dangerous opportunities, but we weren’t clinical enough,” she explained.
She also emphasized that Charlton created few chances apart from the penalty that decided the contest.
Disappointment Despite Progress
Langley highlighted that much of the work done on the training ground was evident on matchday. However, the lack of goals left the manager frustrated.
“Most of what we worked on in training came out today. That’s pleasing as a coach, but not getting any points from the match is just so disappointing,” Langley said. “When luck’s not on your side, the ball just doesn’t fall for you.”
What’s Next for Newcastle United Women?
Newcastle United Women have an opportunity to turn things around when they travel to London to face Crystal Palace on Sunday, October 5. Langley will hope her side can rediscover their scoring touch and climb up the WSL2 table.
