Lorenzo Musetti Advances to Chengdu Open Semi-Finals

Lorenzo Musetti delivered a commanding performance at the Chengdu Open, defeating Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-3, 6-3 to reach his third consecutive semi-final at the ATP 250 event. The Italian star now owns a record seven wins in Chengdu and will face Alexander Shevchenko for a spot in the title match.

Musetti’s Impressive Quarter-Final Display

Top seed Lorenzo Musetti showcased consistency and poise against Basilashvili, hitting just 14 unforced errors compared to the Georgian’s 36. The victory improved Musetti’s Lexus ATP Head2Head series with Basilashvili to 2-2 and reinforced his status as one of the tournament’s standout performers.

“He’s really aggressive, so you have to stay focused on every point. I felt he was playing good tennis, but I managed to stay there, especially on my serve, and I’m very happy to be in the semis,” Musetti said.

The 23-year-old has compiled a 32-13 record in 2025 and is chasing his first title of the season. With this win, Musetti also moved ahead of Alex de Minaur to seventh in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin, bringing him closer to qualifying for the Nitto ATP Finals.

Shevchenko Sets Up Semi-Final Clash

Musetti’s semi-final opponent, Alexander Shevchenko, advanced with a 7-6(2), 3-6, 6-2 victory over qualifier Taro Daniel. The clash promises to be a tactical battle as both players aim to reach the Chengdu Open final.

American Contenders: Nakashima and Tabilo

In the bottom half of the draw, Brandon Nakashima survived a thrilling all-American quarter-final against Marcos Giron, winning 6-3, 2-6, 7-6(3). The 24-year-old came back from the brink at 4-5, 40/40 in the third set to claim his third ATP Tour semi-final of the season.

Nakashima will face Alejandro Tabilo, who continues his remarkable run from qualifying with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 win over Christopher O’Connell. Tabilo, coming off wrist and abdominal injuries earlier in 2025, has revitalized his season in China, reaching his first semi-final since Mallorca last June.

“I’m just so happy right now, especially coming from the qualies. I’ve been loving it here in China,” Tabilo said.

Chengdu Open Semi-Final Outlook

The Chengdu Open semi-finals feature a blend of top seeds and emerging talents. Musetti aims to secure his first title in Chengdu after multiple semi-final runs, while Nakashima and Tabilo continue their impressive performances in China. Tennis fans can expect high-quality matches and thrilling action as the tournament reaches its climax.
